I think that's a great idea... But, sadly you'd have a helluva time working out the logistics of such an event. I suppose anything is possible if given enough attention.

I personally would be the first one in line at an event like that, being that I know that even if I didn't meet anyone who caught my attention, that it would be great to meet fellow people who are (as you put it) in the same boat as me...

Like a meet and greet, as it were. I think it would be awesome! And, you'd get to meet folks from your neck of the woods...

Wow! Can you imagine what a party that would be?! Everyone there just to have fun, meet new people!

Seriously... Why hasn't this already been done? Most of us spend entire weekends just being dissappointed by the regular parties... This... This could be awesome... It has potential.

I suppose there's the old saying of if you book it, they will come. Since the site does have a news section, and we all know that moderators have god complexs... Then getting the word out shouldn't be too hard (I say that with a twinkle in my eye).

As for the thousands of people on the site, divide it up into major areas... Durbs, cape town and johburg. Advertise and hope like hell they show up. As for actual single people showing up... Well, that's one for the people... Maybe if we do discover a non single letsmeetanite (patent pending) then, we do a name and shame section on the website...

woohoo! Okay then, we have a mission. I'm currently between moving at the moment, so for me it would have to be in durban. A lot of good clubs and such out there...

Let me get a small idea going of what it would actually need to take off (I have a friend in events co-ordinating, she should be fine with me bugging her).

Hahahahaha... I didn't mean anything about the god-complex, I used to admin for a site a long time ago too, you guys do an amazing job around here... Keep it up, with this discussion group and the site... It new and different... I like.

So yeah, let me see what I can pull out of my bag of tricks and then post it online. Anyone want to add anything... Well, you know what to do.

Okay then. I did consider a time-frame and having more people there would be great! But (and I hate to use the cliche)... Isn't the idea of this thing to meet people from your area?

No good meeting people from say, cape town, and youre in pretoria... Wouldn't that be sort of embracing the one-night stand option that I think this sort of party, or meet up, is trying to steer away from?

So, already got some ideas flowing. If anyone wants to add something or has any ideas, let share them. I think we may have to start a new topic forum to really get the attention going. And then... The news section! And then! The world! Bwahahahahahahahaha! Ahem...

So, I've been discussing this meetup thing with a friend of mine and he suggested a few things. A few really cool ideas...

So, Patrick... I've got a few things drafted... Just random chicken scratches in this bag of ferrets some call a brain, anywhere I can send them to you?

Would really like to get this thing off the ground... Maybe as a new years thing?

Okay, so after some time off and discussing this idea with a few folks, I've come up with a few questions for the people out here. Hopefully someone actually replies this time.

So, first off: venues? I think that approaching a few night clubs and asking them for their help in this regard would be a great idea. They have the infrastructure after all and, if a cover charge is agreed upon, then all should go smoothly... After all, they do it anyway for 4 to 5 days a week.

Then that brings us nicely to point 2: cost. What would you guys say is an acceptable cover charge. We don't want to make money becasue this event would be about meeting people. So, once again, it'll be the for the venue and their staff.

Point 3: the fat penguin. This has been nagging on me for a little bit. Should it be a themed thing? Costumes make a great way to break the ice in these type of events, and you can tell a lot about people by the amount of effort they'll put into things.

Point 4: time frame. Obviously people work and this needs to be sorted out. We can't cater for everyone, but I think that a weekend (read saturday) party would be ideal... It's the weekend... It's not like everyone will have something better to do... Right?

Point 5: spreading the word. Right, so now the pink elephant. How to get the word out. Well, I was hoping that it could be put onto the news section and that'll generate some hype. Another way, since everyone and their grandmother uses the bloody thing, is facebook. Events like this are posted there all the time and hey, it's facebook, can't be used for evil all the time. Thirdly... Word of mouth, the more people talk about it, the beeter it can only be.

so, those are the points... Any suggestions relevant to this task will be most helpful. I'm just feeling that people aren't taking an active interest in this... Did I offend someone? If so, sorry... Really...
